Tiny bird egg found on ground... how do I tell if it's alive?

In a dark room, put a small but bright flashlight to it. It will enable you to look inside. If it is cloudy and all one shade, it likely is dead. If it is different shades, or with branches of blood vessels, then it is alive.You can google "egg candling" for details as to how to do this.
