Can someone tell me what kind of duck this is?

There's this duck that's been wandering around our neighborhood, and it's pure black with a little white speckling on its chest. It always hangs out with this male mallard, so we're assuming that it's a female. I can't find any similar species in Michigan, so is this a mutation of a mallard or a completely different species?
